360 Degree Body Lift

360-Degree Body Lift

Bariatric surgery helps people with morbid obesity lose a significant amount of weight quickly and is usually performed by general surgeons. After reaching their target weight, many patients face the challenge of excess, sagging skin across various areas like the arms, abdomen, waist, buttocks, and thighs. When a patient’s body mass index (BMI) drops to 25 or below, it’s a good time to consult a plastic surgeon about body contouring options. This is important because studies from the United States show that patients who undergo body contouring after gastric bypass surgery experience better quality of life and less weight regain.

What Happens During a 360-Degree Body Lift?

Under general anesthesia, the surgeon removes excess skin from the abdomen and waist, reshaping these areas for a smoother contour. The incision starts on the front abdominal wall, hidden within the bikini line, and extends around the sides to the back—completing a full 360-degree circle around the body. This approach allows removal of loose skin and lifting of the buttocks and pubic region. If abdominal muscles have separated (a condition called diastasis), they are tightened during the procedure. The belly button is also repositioned and reconstructed. Before closing the incisions, drains are placed to prevent fluid buildup.

How to Prepare for Surgery

Before surgery, it’s essential to reach and maintain your ideal weight for at least six months. Smoking should be stopped at least four weeks in advance to support healing. In the final 10 days before surgery, avoid medications and supplements that thin the blood:

  • Pain relievers like Apranax, Voltaren, and Vermidon should be avoided. If pain relief is necessary, Minoset or Novalgin can be used instead.

  • Multivitamins containing ginseng, ginkgo biloba, coenzyme Q10, and other products like green tea, flaxseed, cherry stems, tomato seeds, or any weight-loss supplements should be discontinued at least 10 days before surgery.

What to Expect After Surgery

While a tummy tuck isn’t usually very painful, pain can be managed with standard medications. For the first 10 days post-surgery, you’ll need to lie with your knees bent toward your abdomen and your upper body slightly bent at the waist. You should start standing and walking—albeit hunched over—the same day or the day after surgery. After about two weeks, you can walk upright again. A special compression garment must be worn for six weeks to support healing. Most patients can return to sports and physical activities six weeks after the procedure.

What Are the Risks?

Undergoing plastic surgery is a personal choice, and it’s important to discuss the benefits and risks with your surgeon. Risks related to body contouring and liposuction include those common to anesthesia, bruising, changes in skin sensation, asymmetries, irregular contours, swelling, and delayed wound healing. Because large amounts of skin are removed, some asymmetry may occur initially and might require follow-up surgeries to correct.

Are the Results Permanent?

If you maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and a balanced diet, the results of your body lift can last a long time. However, gaining weight afterward can affect the slim waistline and firm abdominal contour achieved through surgery.
