Zirconium Dental Coating

Zirconium crowns, which have become increasingly popular among dentists in recent years, are highly favored for their natural appearance. Aesthetically, zirconium is the restoration material that most closely matches the natural color of teeth. These crowns are especially ideal for front teeth, including those used for biting, as they offer both excellent aesthetics and light transmission, making them comfortable and visually seamless.

After zirconium crowns are placed, maintaining meticulous oral and dental care is essential. With proper hygiene, zirconium restorations can last for many years. Additionally, zirconium is an excellent option for replacing missing teeth, as it can be used in bridge applications with ease. Based on the patient’s preferences, crowns can be crafted in white or natural-toned shades to closely match the surrounding teeth, resulting in a natural and seamless appearance.

What is zirconium coating?

Zirconium is a white material used instead of the gray metal that was previously placed under ceramic substructures in dental prostheses. It provides a more natural tooth-like appearance.

Unlike metal-supported crowns, zirconium crowns eliminate the aesthetic concerns patients often experience. This treatment offers a natural-looking tooth appearance.

Zirconium crowns are used in various situations, including:

  • Closing gaps between teeth (diastema closure)

  • Restoring old fillings with damaged structure or color

  • Repairing broken teeth

  • Replacing metal-supported bridges

  • Correcting misaligned or crooked teeth

  • Treating previously prepared teeth or those with significant material loss

  • Addressing severe discoloration that cannot be corrected with whitening treatments

There are two types of zirconium:

Solid Zirconium

Both types of zirconium are produced using CAD/CAM technology. Solid zirconium is harder and more resistant to clenching and chewing forces. It provides strong support for weakened teeth. Due to its opaque nature, it is especially suitable for use on back teeth.

High Translucent Zirconium

High translucent zirconium crowns are highly compatible with natural teeth. This type of zirconium is primarily used on front teeth.

Appearance

Zirconium is the most commonly preferred material for dental crowns. Porcelain zirconium crowns offer the closest appearance to natural teeth. Because the material closely mimics the natural structure of a tooth, it blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth.

Hard Structure of Zirconium

Zirconium is an extremely durable material with high resistance to abrasion, wear, and tear. It is 6 to 7 times stronger than metal-ceramic or other types of porcelain. Additionally, zirconium offers excellent resistance to biting and chewing forces.
