PEDODONTICS CHILDREN'S DENTISTRY

Why do we need to treat baby teeth even though they are about to fall out?

Tooth decay in baby teeth can cause discomfort during eating. If left untreated, it may worsen over time, leading to throbbing pain, swelling in the face and oral tissues, and potential infection.

What happens if milk teeth are extracted early without treatment?

Each baby tooth serves to maintain the space for the permanent tooth that will eventually replace it.

If a primary tooth is lost prematurely, the surrounding teeth may gradually shift into the empty space due to chewing forces, reducing the space needed for the permanent tooth to erupt properly. As a result, the permanent tooth may emerge in the wrong position or become impacted. This can lead to the need for orthodontic treatment later on.

What are the factors that increase early caries and what can be done?

Dietary habits and brushing routines play a significant role in the development of cavities. In infants, the habit of falling asleep while nursing or bottle-feeding can lead to tooth decay, particularly in areas where milk pools in the mouth overnight. To prevent this, it’s advisable to wean the child off this habit or at least offer a small amount of water afterward to help rinse the mouth.

To help children develop good brushing habits, parents can set a positive example by brushing their teeth together with their child. For younger children who haven’t yet developed the motor skills for brushing, parents can clean their teeth by gently wiping them with a cloth wrapped around their finger.

Why is early diagnosis of mouth and jaw problems important?

Mouth and jaw problems that may require surgery in adults can often be prevented in children by identifying them early. Since children’s growth and development are still ongoing, these issues can typically be resolved without surgical intervention by properly guiding their natural development.

What can I do for my child's dental health?

Children should visit the dentist every six months for regular check-ups to help detect and treat oral and dental issues at an early stage.
