Breast Augmentation

For much of the early 20th century, women concealed their breasts—first with corsets to flatten them, then bras that shaped them into exaggerated forms. By the 1960s, influenced by feminist movements, many tried to ignore their breasts altogether. But that inner feminine voice pushed women to embrace their natural beauty, and today breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery worldwide.

What is a Breast Implant?

The first breast implant was developed by Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow in 1962, with the initial successful procedure performed on Timmie Jean Lindsey. Since then, implants have evolved significantly. Modern silicone implants have a jelly-like consistency that holds shape well, resists leakage, and avoids deformation, making them look and feel natural.

Do Breast Implants Cause Cancer or Connective Tissue Disorders?

Although concerns have existed about implants causing autoimmune diseases or cancer, extensive long-term studies have not supported these fears. Today, patients and surgeons prioritize implants that provide a natural look and feel, blending seamlessly with the body.

How Are Breast Implants Placed?

Implants can be inserted through incisions in the armpit, around the areola, or under the breast fold. I prefer the inframammary fold incision because it allows for precise implant placement beneath the muscle. This incision is hidden when standing and only slightly visible when lying down. Importantly, this approach avoids damaging milk ducts or breast tissue, so it doesn’t interfere with future mammograms.

Are Drains and Bandages Used After Surgery?

Drains are placed in both breasts immediately after surgery to remove excess fluid, and the incision areas are covered with dressings. A special supportive bra designed for implants is worn. Drains and bandages are typically removed on the first day after surgery. Wearing the supportive bra for at least six weeks is essential for optimal healing.

Is the Surgery Painful?

Thanks to local anesthetics, patients usually experience no pain during surgery. Any discomfort afterward can be managed easily with oral pain medications. Gentle shoulder and arm movements, like brushing your hair, can usually begin the day after surgery.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Breast implants generally last between 10 and 15 years regardless of brand. Around the 10-year mark, many patients start considering replacement, and by 15 years, it’s often time to plan for new implants with your surgeon.
